In the last two decades, the municipality of Toluca –- capital of the State of Mexico -– has flourished into an important economic center. Automotive and pharmaceutical companies have found viable spaces to develop their operations in the city’s industrial parks. The service and communications industries in Toluca also fuel economic growth. Furthermore, Toluca’s infrastructure (transportation system, highway access and an airport facilitate travel to and from the municipality) and its proximity to Mexico City have propelled the city into the role of an urban and economic center that plays a fundamental role in the livelihood of its 800,000 inhabitants.
