Based on the statistical analysis of a national sample of 100 communities across the United States, the authors find that Indian casinos have substantial beneficial economic and social impacts on surrounding communities. Further analysis shows that this effect is driven by the fact that Indian casinos are more likely to be located on relatively economically depressed areas displaying lower average income prior to casinos introduction.
