Jean-Robert Cadet is the author of Restavec: Haitian Slave Child to Middle-Class American, published in 1998. One person who is determined to draw the world’s attention to the plight of restavek children is Jean-Robert Cadet, once a restavek himself. A graduate of the University of Cincinnati, Cadet has created a foundation to advocate on behalf of Haitian children. He raises awareness of the restavec issue by sharing his story, speaking at colleges and universities across the United States. Today, his book is used in numerous American universities for course work in African-American studies, anthropology, Caribbean history, and social justice. Jean-Robert has addressed a wide range of audiences, such as the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland and New York, N.Y., UNICEF, U.S. Senate, Bahamian Department of Education, and Amnesty International.
