This case study refers to a program implemented by the city of Potchefstroom, which has adopted programs to address the needs of its citizens by encouraging economic opportunities, improving health facilities and building houses. In 2001, Potchefstroom joined the Cities for Climate Protection Program of the International Council for Local Environment Initiatives. The program demonstrates how a small city can take actions to address environmental issues and alleviate poverty through co-operative action between local government and communities.
