Impumelelo Awards Trust, S. Africa

The HIV/AIDS Lay Counsellor Programme is an innovative partnership between the Department of Health and LifeLine Western Cape which started in 1997. Recognised by the Impumelelo Awards Trust of South Africa, it is a comprehensive programme which involves recruiting unemployed people from disadvantaged communities with a high HIV prevalence and offering them training in counselling skills and all areas of HIV/AIDS information and support.
