
This section highlights efforts and pilot programs in the field of nontraditional education and development. This encompasses all types of "student-focused" and "whole child" programs that interact with both gifted and special needs students. It also reports current advances in voucher programs, charter schools, magnet schools, and home-based schools. Progressive enhancements in at-risk programs, mentoring, multicultural education, computer science technology, financial literacy, home economics, and distance education are also covered.

The Institute of Technical Education of Singapore was formerly a last resort for low-achieving students. It underwent a ten-year reform plan revamping irrelevant curriculum, upgrading learning environments, and instating new academic requirements for current teachers.
