The concept of a Bank for Children and Youth arose from implementation of participatory budgeting methods in the community. Local advocates called for improved access to recreation for young people in Cerro Navia. To provide funding to meet this demand, the Bank for Children and Youth was born.
The primary benefit of this initiative has been the cooperative management of the program by its beneficiaries, which has opened a public space for citizen participation and civil organization. The children have been essential to this process, determining their own project priorities and executing these programs with the voluntary assistance of adult community members. By focusing on recreation and sports organization, this program also opens the door to achieving objectives related to youth development such as civic education.
